KFJO arrived on the scene in the summer of 1998 when radio giants Jacor Communications bought KZWC from Spanish-language radio entrepreneur Amador Bustos for $4.5 million. Out went the La Z programming aimed at younger Hispanic listeners and in came “92 Rock”, a three-station simulcast of San Jose’s longtime AOR powerhouse KSJO.
In short order, Jacor was absorbed by Clear Channel Communications (now iHeartMedia) in a multi-billion dollar merger.
The 92 Rock arrangement lasted until 1994, when the Walnut Creek station began to simulcast another well-known property: KABL. The call letters were shifted to KABL-FM for less than a year before another change: to KKDV.
