Say “Tom Campbell” and a certain generation of Bay Area radio listeners immediately responds, “Top of the Hill, Daly City”. He voiced innumerable commercials for Matthews TV and Stereo City, a powerhouse retailer and advertiser for many years. The tag line for the Mission Boulevard store’s spots called out its location in Daly City.
But before that, “Tall Tom” Campbell made a name for himself on KYA in the mid-through-the-late 1960s. His promotional stunts included listing his number in the phone book, lending listeners anything from albums to his Corvette, and, after receiving public criticism, threatening to quit and move to New York, pending votes from his listeners. He did leave KYA in 1970, working at KLOK and KNEW before moving to Los Angeles, where he enjoyed success as a television commercial spokesman for many years.
