Sandee Althouse’s love of radio began in college when she searched out other punk rock music lovers at San Diego State University, which led her to stations playing punk rock. That inspired her to pursue radio as a career. A graduate from San Francisco State University, Sandy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication & Media Studies.
Her first job after graduating from college was with a new radio start-up called Metro Traffic Control where she reported from the traffic plane. In 1984 radio great Don Bleu hired Sandee to produce his morning show on KYUU, then in 1986 she moved over to KRQR as part of their morning show with Peter B. Collins and Michael Knight, and later on, John Evans. There, she originated a fun daily feature called the “Honkin’ Good Joke of the Day” which aired through 1988.
Sandee then moved back to Metro Traffic as the afternoon anchor mirroring Joe Mc Connell’s morning shift. She also served on KFOG doing news, and as a weekend DJ, and on KGO as a news reporter, weekend anchor and traffic reporter from the KGO helicopter. Her experience served her well when Sandee moved to KQED to be an integral part of a new format featuring 24 hour news and information. That was in 1988 and after 36 years, she’s still there, adding that she’s grateful to work for a station that leaves room for graceful aging. Sandee still loves punk rock and radio and says radio loves her back.
