CHRS Invites Fans To Radio Day By The Bay
The annual celebration of all things on the airwaves – Radio Day By The Bay – will take place on Saturday, July 20, at Radio Central in Alameda.
This year’s event arrives as the California Historical Radio Society marks its 50th birthday (1974-2024). Hosted by Bay Area radio legends Terry McGovern (BARHOF 2008) and Kim Wonderley (BARHOF 2011), the event begins at 8 AM at the California Historical Radio Society’s headquarters on Central Avenue in Alameda, and will include a live radio drama, “Our Miss Brooks”, directed by Peter Finch (BARHOF 2014), live music with Don Neely’s Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, the announcement of the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame‘s Class of 2024, and an auction of classic radios to benefit CHRS’ ongoing effort to refurbish its cathedral to broadcasting.
Doors to Radio Central at 2152 Central Avenue in Alameda open for attendees at 8 AM, with the event running through 3 PM. A $10 donation to CHRS gets you in for the entire day. (Children under the age of 12 are admitted at no charge.)
Free parking is offered around the corner from Radio Central at the Alameda High School lot on Walnut Street.
The much-awaited announcement of the BARHOF Class of 2024 will be one of the highlights of the program, with Ben Fong-Torres (BARHOF 2010) and a special guest handling the duties, assisted by Bay Area Radio Museum executive director Len Shapiro.
Bring your camera and autograph book – a meet and greet with past inductees into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame will take place throughout the day.
If you’re looking for a new old radio for your collection or as the centerpiece of your living room, numerous classic sets will be up for auction. Click here for the auction catalog, which is being updated regularly.
Tours of Radio Central will also take place throughout the (Radio) day.
