“Top 33 On 99” Newspaper

The front page of the “K-KIS Top 33 On 99” survey-newspaper from June 21, 1966, which proclaims the Contra Costa County outlet as “Really The Number One Station In Northern California’s Inland Empire.” Also included in this week’s issue is a survey of the Top 33 hit records.
The tabloid-sized publication included news of a recent K-KIS concert at Diablo Valley College, headlined by the Lovin’ Spoonful and emceed by the station’s Bob Evans and “Radio Ray” Farrell. Meanwhile, the station’s “debonair, mod-dresser,” Johnny Van, hosted a battle of the bands in Walnut Creek.
Swing jock “Wild Bill” Plummer, also featured on the front page of this edition, is scheduled to cover for the vacationing “Radio Ray” and Bob Evans later this week.
The station, which went on the air in September 1949 as KECC and became KATT in 1957, took on the KKIS call letters in September 1958. In October 1993, under new ownership, the station became KATD.
