KXJO existed during a time when the radio industry was undergoing rapid change and consolidation. Jacor Communications’ purchase of the former KZSF led to the creation of  the “92-Rock Network” in early 1999, anchored by Jacor’s San Jose rock station KSJO.

Jacor was swallowed up by Clear Channel Communications in a deal finalized in May 1999. The following years, Clear Channel merged with AMFM, Inc. and the combined entity needed to spin off Bay Area properties to satisfy the Federal Communications Commission.

That led to KXJO being identified as one of a portfolio of stations that would be divested to a company called Rodriguez Communications in 2000. Two months later, KXJO and five other stations inwere sold to Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS).

A lease agreement kept KSJO programming beaming from KXJO until May 2002, when SBS switched to a dance-music format called “The Party”.  On May 15, 2002 the call letters were changed to KPTI.
