The second KNBR-FM to be heard in the Bay Area came into being on September 6, 2019 when station owner Cumulus Media did away with the longtime call letters KFOG and cut over to a simulcast of its sports-focused KNBR.
For longtime Bay Area radio fans, it was a fascinating occurrence. KNBR was the descendant of pioneering station KPO, later acquired by the National Broadcasting Company and rechristened KNBC and then KNBR. NBC’s own FM station, KNBR-FM, had been sold multiple times and by 2019, was known as KMVQ. And the 104.5 FM station known as KFOG had been a “beautiful music” station for many years before a long run as “The Home of Quality Rock & Roll”, an era that led to a “Legendary Station” designation by the Bay Area Radio Museum and Hall of Fame in 2019. It was only a few months later that KFOG disappeared from the Bay Area radio scene.
