KLCQ replaced the short-lived KVVV in February 1994 after consistently poor ratings did in the previous Adult Contemporary-formatted station.
Sacramento-based owner Fuller-Jeffrey Broadcasting spun the format dial again, hoping a ’70s-focused rock oldies approach would change the station’s fortunes. Operations manager Jose Diaz said, “We really wanted to focus in on an audience that’s not into new music.” Morning host Steve Jaxon made the transition from KVVV to KLCQ, which billed itself as “Classic 92.9”.
The new format and new call letters came as Fuller-Jeffrey was shopping its Sonoma County properties around in hopes of finding a buyer.
In April 1996, Fort Lauderdale, FL based Amaturo Group signed a letter of intent to purchase KLCQ, KSRO and KXFX from Fuller-Jeffrey (Amaturo acquired KMGG at the same time from Pacific Radio). A few months later, Amaturo changed the call letters to KFGY and launched country station “Froggy 92.9”.
