Hank Greenwald

BARHOF Inductee Hank Greenwald 2009

A native of Detroit, Howard Greenwald was so enamored of the exploits of Detroit Tigers star Hank Greenberg that he started calling himself “Hank”.

While a child, Greenwald’s family moved to Syracuse, NY. A keen radio listener there could hear baseball broadcasting legends such as Russ Hodges, Red Barber and Mel Allen. A young Greenwald was smitten and it wasn’t long before he, too, was broadcasting baseball games, starting while a student at Syracuse University.

He arrived in the Bay Area in 1964, working alongside Bill King (BARHOF 2006) for the then-San Francisco Warriors basketball broadcasts on KNBR.  Greenwald joined the San Francisco Giants broadcast team in 1979. With his wit, knowledge and relaxed style, he became a fan favorite until his departure in 1996. His Giants tenure was interrupted by two seasons handling New York Yankees radio broadcasts.

Hank Greenwald died in 2018 at age 83.
