Born Bill Lenkey, Bill Lee grew up in Cleveland, OH where he listened to great artists and DJs like Alan Freed, Mad Daddy and others. His days as a garage band musician morphed into a radio career that began in at WLYT-FM in his hometown.
After stops in Columbus, GA and Hartford, CT, Lee landed at KFRC in the late 1970s during the stations “Big 610” heyday years. Lee, the evening jock at KFRC, became known for his high-energy style that often included rhyming while introducing songs. His first stay in San Francisco ended after three years.
There would be stops in Fargo, ND, Minneapolis, Denver and New York City before Lee was again heard in the Bay Area, holding down the “New Jack Zoo” morning program on KMEL.
After a memorable five-year run, Lee wound up back in New York, where he picked up the “Broadway Bill” nickname that accompanied him to the national Radio Hall of Fame in 2022.
