Bill Doubleday

BARHOF Inductee Bill Doubleday 2011

John William “Bouncin’ Bill” Doubleday broke into radio at KSAN as a teenager and became one of the original star R&B disc jockeys, spinning the latest rhythm and blues records with some early Elvis mixed in, plus commercial spots for local barbecue joints and R&B clubs.

Not unlike “Jumpin’ George Oxford”, Doubleday was a Southern-born white man who plugged in to the feel of an emerging sound coming from mostly-Black musicians.

Along with Don Barksdale, he was part of a potent one-two combo at Oakland’s KWBR (later to become KDIA). Doubleday became the station’s general manager in September 1969, a position he held until September 1974.
