Alice Potter broke the glass ceiling, becoming a rare major-market female radio station general manager when she was appointed to the position at KRE in 1974. It was not an easy transition: KRE was losing money and had been hit by a strike by the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).
Potter came to KPAT (KRE’s FM station) late in 1964 as director of public relations and chief copywriter. She had previously served as continuity director and program host at KSOO-TV in Sioux Falls, SD.
She became a full-time sales executive for KPAT in February 1968, and later rose to sales manager of the station.
In February 1974, following a complete shakeup of the station’s staff, Potter was named general manager. She left KRE early in 1977 to serve as vice president and general manager of San Francisco television station KTSF (Channel 26).
Alice Potter died in 2018 at the age of 90.
