This 1929 publicity photo shows KPO sportscaster Don Thompson, who had recently joined the station as a night announcer.
Three years earlier he was an NFL player for the Los Angeles Buccaneers during their only season in the league, following years of multi-sport stardom at the University of Redlands in Southern California.
Thompson soon found himself on the fast track as an announcer in the new medium of sports radio. He gained fame up and down the West Coast, calling most of the early Rose Bowl games carried on radio among other events. Thompson worked out of Seattle and Spokane as well as California.

The Bay Area Radio Museum and Hall of Fame thanks Len Shapiro for his contribution of this photograph to our archives.
