Licensed to the Sonoma County town of Windsor, KMHX represented an expansion of the portfolio of Jack Fritz and Ron Castro, who already controlled Rohnert Park-licensed KRPQ through their company Results Radio. Both stations operated out of space on Redwood Drive in Rohnert Park, near Highway 101 and Rohnert Park Expressway.

Longtime Sonoma County business operator Judy Yep Hughes had originally obtained the construction permit for the station but before the station went on the air in 1998, sold it to Results Radio for $1.3 million.

KMHX launched with a Modern Adult Contemporary format, later tweaked to Hot A/C marketed as “Mix 104”. Within a year, the station was showing up among the ten stations in the Santa Rosa Arbitron “book”; six of the top ten were generally San Francisco stations.

In 2000, the station picked up the syndicated Bob and Sheri Show, featuring Bob Lacey and Sheri Lynch.

Results Radio sold KMHX to Spanish-language broadcaster Lazer Media for $6.85 million in a 2006 package deal that included Cloverdale-licensed KSRT.  Lazer switched the call letters from KMHX to KJOR and installed the Spanish Adult Hits La Mejor format.
