Surely one of the shortest-lived stations in Bay Area radio history, KHIT existed from February 1, 1988 until May 14 of the same year. It bridged the gap between KKCY, which was being sold by Olympic Broadcasting, and its replacement, Jim Gabbert’s KOFY-FM.
KHIT launched with no live air talent, then quickly added a number of disc jockeys. They were essentially running a trial for a Top 40 format Olympic planned to install on a Kansas City station it was acquiring,
The San Francisco Chronicle reported it wasn’t all bad for the temporary air staff, pointing to the case of Gary Franklin. He’d come from a station in Albuquerque, NM, the 80th-largest radio market, and would forever be able to say he’d been heard in the fourth-largest market.
