KBTB launched in the spring of 2004 after 3 Point Media acquired the former KPTI.
3 Point was an investment vehicle run by Christopher Devine and Bruce Buzil, fueled by cash from C. Robert Allen III. Allen was a reclusive multimillionaire, the son of Wall Street legend Charles Allen Jr. By 2009, a court-appointed guardian for Allen would bring suit against Devine and Buzil, alleging they had preyed upon a lonely, frail and elderly man to defraud him of nearly $70 million. There would be numerous other legal claims against Devine and Buzil.
Their Bay Area radio ownership career was brief. After installing Skip Dillard as program director of a station branding itself as “Power 92.7”, airing an Urban format, they immediately looked to “flip” the station.
By the fall of 2004, 3 Point Media had sold the station to locally-owned Flying Bear Media, headed by Joe Bayliss. The station switched call letters to KNGY, branded itself “Energy 92.7”, and leaned hard into dance music.
