Bay Area native Steve Bitker held the morning sports anchor position at KCBS from 1991 until his retirement in 2021.
Bitker, a University of California-Berkeley graduate, started his radio career in Fresno before getting his first Bay Area on-air job at KNBR, where he was a news reporter and sports anchor. He also served as a backup announcer for the Oakland A’s between 2001 and 2011, after seven years broadcasting for the minor-league Sonoma County Crushers.
Bitker began his career in sports journalism while attending Woodside High School, covering high school sports for the Redwood City Tribune. After graduating from Cal, Bitker spent two years as a news writer at KSFO, then three years in Japan serving as news/sports anchor for JCTV, Japan’s only English-language TV station. His return to the Bay Area brought him to KNBR.
Bitker authored a popular book entitled The Original San Francisco Giants, focusing on the Giants’ first season in San Francisco and profiling every member of that team.
Bitker has won numerous sports broadcasting awards from the Associated Press, the Northern California Radio-Television News Directors Association and the Peninsula Press Club.
