Mike Sugerman

BARHOF Inductee Mike Sugerman 2013

Los Angeles native Mike Sugerman is best known for his regular “About the Bay” features, where he skillfully told the stories of the fascinating characters and events in the Bay Area.

Sugerman received his bachelor’s degree from UCLA after initially studying at UC Santa Barbara. He would go on to earn a master’s degree from San Jose State University and pursue additional postgraduate studies at the University of Chicago.

Sugerman’s Bay Area radio employers include KXRX, KFRC, and KCBS. He spent many years at KPIX television, winning multiple Emmy awards, while continuing to contribute regular reports to KCBS.

In 2015, Sugerman and his wife Janice Wright moved to Brooklyn to be close to their young grandchildren. Both worked at New York City’s WCBS for a time.

Sugerman was paralyzed during surgery for a torn aorta in 2022, and true to his nature he began telling the story of his predicament. He is confined to a wheelchair, but is hopeful he may walk again, and has tested robot walkers and other scientific breakthroughs in an effort to better understand his situation.He credits some of his resiliency to his wife Janice and her unending support. Together, they created the podcast I’m Still Rolling, which tells his story and the stories of others who face such challenges.
