Meteorologist Mike Pechner spent many years telling Bay Area resident what kind of weather to expect. He says he became interested in meteorology after witnessing a rare snowstorm in Novato in 1957.
Described in a 1992 San Francisco Examiner profile as “the Bay Area’s weather wonk”, Pechner grew up in Marin County and delivered his first radio forecasts in 1967 at KTIM-FM in San Rafael.
Pechner began work as a desk assistant at KCBS, moving up to weatherman in 1977. He remained connected with KCBS on and off until 2009. There would also be stays at KNBR and KFYI, as well as work supplying weather information to several Bay Area TV stations.
Pechner holds a BA in environmental studies and geography from San Francisco State University. He is also a noted forensic meteorologist and railroad enthusiast.
