
Larry was a key newscaster on KYA in its Top 40 years in the ’60s, ’70’s and ’80’s, and was known for his smooth and concise delivery. Brownell, whose real name was Larry Buller, came to San Francisco from Buffalo, New York along with Bay Area Radio Hall of Famers Tommy Saunders, Russ “the Moose” Syracuse, and Gene Nelson in the early 1960’s. It was said he worked with so many different disc jockeys through the years, that he refused to learn their names. Larry continued as a newsman on KSFO into the 90’s. He passed away in August, 2004 and is survived by seven children.
He also worked at WHHH in Warren OH and I believe WAND in Canton OH was his first Radio Job back in July of 1948. He worked at WHHH from December of 1949-November of 1953 then, got a tv job at WKBN-TV in Youngstown OH and worked there until June of 54. When he got the WKBW DJ job in Buffalo NY. Left Buffalo before on August 17,1962 to work for KYA which he stayed there for a long time.
