Joe Levitt began his radio career as an announcer at San Jose’s KQW in 1929, twenty years after “Doc” Herrold gave birth to radio broadcasting as an industry. Later, he founded Coast Radio and put San Jose’s second postwar radio station on the air, a year after KEEN launched in 1947. That station was KXRX, whose “alumni association” includes BARHOF members Mike Sugerman (2013), Hal Ramey (2011) and Stan Bunger (2010). Joe, together with his sons John and Jim Levitt, would go on to operate three successful East Bay stations: KUIC, KKIQ and KKDV.
