The Final Days Of Kool Gold

October 15, 1991

Don Crawford hosts the syndicated “Kool Gold” 1950s Oldies But Goodies programming during the final days of James Gabbert’s ownership of the plucky little San Mateo station, which identifies itself as “AM Super Stereo KOFY 1050” at this time.

Gabbert, who previously built KPEN (which became KIOI) and later owned KIQI (1010 AM),  had acquired KOFY 1050, and was the first voice heard on the station when it signed on under his reign on March 3, 1986.

In an announcement (heard a bit more than 33 minutes into this monophonic recording) during which he thanks his listeners, Gabbert notes that he’ll also be the last person heard on KOFY in this iteration, as he hosts the final morning show on October 20.

After that, Gabbert notes, the station will transition into the “La Poderosa” Spanish-language format.

Showing that he’s looking out for his Golden Oldies-loving audience, Gabbert also permits an interesting advertiser onto KOFY’s airwaves: about 22 minutes into the recording, listen for Gene Nelson, who invites listeners to join him on KOFY’s competitor, the simulcasting 560 KSFO and 93.3 KYA-FM, where Nelson hosts the morning show.

The Gabbert era at KOFY/1050 would not mark his last venture into Bay Area radio, as he would later own the declining KDIA (1310 AM) in Oakland.

For his many contributions to local broadcasting, on the air and behind the scenes, Gabbert was elected to the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2006 as a member of the first class to be inducted.
