The front page of the free “K-KIS Top 33 On 99” survey-newspaper from July 12, 1966, spills the beans on the station’s DJs with “Playboy Prattle” — dishing the dirt on “Captain Nite-Krawler” (alter ego of Radio Ray Farrell, or simply “Capt. N-K” to his legion of followers) and his twelve-mile hike with full pack through a Southern California desert, and the swingin’ bachelor lives of K-Kis Playboys Larry Ickes and Johnny Van.
The official publication of Contra Costa County’s KKIS — “Really The Number One Station In Northern California’s Inland Empire” — also included a survey of the week’s Top 33 hit records and articles about popular music stars, including Herb Alpert (photo, top right).
Swing jock Bill Plummer (“affectionately known as the ‘bull,'” according to the text) is also shown on the front page of this issue, warming up in the bullpen.
The station, which went on the air in September 1949 as KECC and became KATT in 1957, took on the KKIS call letters in September 1958. In October 1993, under new ownership, the station became KATD.
