This comic strip, from the 16-page “Top 33 On 99” free newspaper published weekly by KKIS, Pittsburg, Calif. — “The Inland Empire’s Most Popular Station” — was drawn by the station’s midday DJ, Radio Ray Farrell, nom de radieux of Ray Lenhart. (Note the KKIS call letters worked into the first frame.)

Among the contemporary music stars appearing in the strip are Sonny & Cher, Bob Dylan and Peter Noone (“Herman” of Herman’s Hermits).

His work at the small Contra Costa County station in early 1967 was a preview of greater things to come for Lenhart, who would become a legend of Top 40 radio as the one and only Bobby Ocean, while continuing to hone his formidable skills as an artist.

The station, which went on the air in September 1949 as KECC and became KATT in 1957, took on the KKIS call letters in September 1958.

In October 1993, under new owner Joe Rosa of Peoples Radio, the station became KATD.

ORIGINAL SIZE: 8-1/2×11 inches.
