KSFO and KWID Radio, San Francisco
Islais Creek Transmitter Site
Circa 1942
Unidentified members of the staffs of KSFO (560 kc. AM) and international shortwave station KWID, both operated by The Associated Broadcasters, are shown at the stations’ shared transmitter site near Islais Creek in San Francisco in this undated photograph. (Staff from the Office of War Information, which advocated the creation of KWID, may also be present in this photograph.)
The KWID shortwave antenna array was located in a field adjacent to the transmitter building. After it was dismantled, the KWID antenna site became a parking and storage lot for a tallow rendering plant.
The photograph below shows the building as it appeared in 2008.
