With the remarkable Don MacKinnon in place following the departure of Gary Owens to sister station KFWB (Channel 98) in Los Angeles earlier in the year, Oakland’s KEWB(Channel 91) remains strong in the Bay Area Top 40 radio battle. MacKinnon, who came to KEWB from L.A.’s KABC, would return to the Southland in 1963, first at KLAC (1963-64) and later at KFWB (1964-65). He was killed in an automobile accident in June 1965.
Rounding out KEWB’s air team in September 1961 were Chris Borden (9 a.m. to noon), Ken Knox (noon to 3 p.m.), Don Bowman (3 to 6 p.m.), Buck Herring (6 to 9 p.m.),Casey Kasem (9 p.m. to midnight), and Michael Jackson (midnight to 6 a.m.).
On the charts, it’s Hayley Mills and “Lets Get Together” (from the hit Disney film “The Parent Trap”) making the amazing leap all the way from #29 to the top spot, bumping Bill Dana as “José Jiménez” (or “Jose Jiminez,” as it is credited here) and “The Astronaut, Part 2” down two notches, making way for The Jive Five’s “My True Story” to move into the #2 slot.
