“Top 33 On 99” Newspaper

The front page of “K-KIS Top 33 On 99” (issue number 35), proudly trumpeted as “The Inland Empire’s Weekly Entertainment Newspaper-Survey.”
The sixteen-page tabloid included behind-the-scenes articles about KKIS, news about popular music and movie stars. This edition spotlighted The Yardbirds and their lead singer, Keith Relf; noted that Gary Lewis was entering the Army at Fort Ord; had the scoop on Sonny & Cher’s latest doings; and, of course, a survey of the Top 33 records being played on the Contra Costa County station.
Getting his own spotlight this first week of 1967 was Bill Plummer, who had started at KKIS in 1958 as a spotter on local football broadcasts and rose to full-fledged status as a disc jockey in 1962.
While continuing to work as a weekend and vacation relief DJ at KKIS until 1982, Mr. Plummer had earned his teaching credential and taught fulltime at Pittsburg High School from 1964 until his retirement in 1999.
On page twelve of this edition is a special comic strip by KKIS midday jock Radio Ray Farrell.
The station, which went on the air in September 1949 as KECC and became KATT in 1957, took on the KKIS call letters in September 1958. In October 1993, under new ownership, the station became KATD.
