Fairmont Hotel Entrance
Fairmont Hotel Entrance

This postcard view of San Francisco’s landmark Fairmont Hotel and Tower, shown from the California Street “annex” side, probably dates from the late 1950s or early 1960s.

Clearly visible near the lower center portion of the photograph is the marquee showing “KSFO,” marking the entrance to the station at 950 California Street. Note that farther down from KSFO (to the left in the photograph) is the sign above the entrance of the famous Tonga Room at The Fairmont.

KSFO was housed in this location from February 1955 until December 1983, when the station was moved to 300 Broadway by King Broadcasting, which had purchased the station from Golden West Broadcasters. The space was subsequently converted into a health and fitness center, and was operating as Club One Nob Hill in 2007.

The photo above took up about two-thirds of the postcard; the other portion included a photograph (shown at right) of the Fairmont’s magnificent entrance.
