The Sounds Of San Francisco

From the KGO Music Tower
Circa 1962

Sounds of San Francisco (LP Cover)

Narrated by Leslie G. Stein, also known as Les Crane (noted for his broadcasts from the legendary hungry i nightclub), this collection of music and spoken interludes was presented on an LP album with these liner notes:

“In January of 1962, KGO created a fantasy — a KGO ‘Music Tower’ … 81 stories high in the sky, looking over the bays and bridges of San Francisco. This windswept spire, built on sounds and suggestions, has captured the imagination of listeners everywhere. KGO personalities broadcast from the very top of this tower … and with the beautiful Bay Area below them, fill the moments between music with vivid descriptions of the many breath-taking views.”

My mother won this album as a door prize at some long-forgotten San Francisco event in 1962. We listened to it on our hi-fi over and over again, forging a special bond between us as well as an even deeper love for this beautiful city. Mom died last week at age 92. Today, I went in search of some of her favorite tunes. I’m so grateful and so delighted to find this old favorite here now. Many tears of joy and happy memories. Thank you from my heart and from Mom’s.

…and thank you, Sandy, for bringing this to my attention. I remember dancing with you to these beautiful sounds of San Francisco. I was finally able to listen all the way through, with a smile on my face, “because of you”.
